Need a Grammar Geek?
And/Or help with other
writing issues?
The written word has always been
my strong point.
Yes, I was the kid who loved silent reading and writing creative
essays.
Spelling comes naturally.
I can hear mistakes in language usage like a blaring horn.
Along with this, I've been an avid fiction reader as long as I
can remember,
and a writer nearly as long.
I can help you with most elements of fiction:
grammar, sentence structure, clarity, typos, strong
beginnings, characterization...
If you have a non-fiction project you would like me to consider,
long or short, I'm willing to look at it.
Let me know what you need. If it's not in my wheelhouse, I'll be
honest about not being the right editor for your project.
Along with having an English minor and nearly twenty published
books, I am certified as an editor through
Poynter and have done a plethora of reviewing for
many years at
Writing.com. I have often
helped author friends and family members figure out how to most
effectively get their point across and grab attention with
well-styled phrasing. Sometimes they even asked for my opinion.
;-)
My Style
I always recommend that authors
know the rules, and then know how to break them.
Novels shouldn't read like formal essays; they must incorporate
the author's voice. I am a fan of the Oxford comma, but I will
respect your wish not to use it, as long as it doesn't affect
clarity. I believe in casual language and spelling use as needed
to highlight your characters and your voice, but formal language
can definitely be the right option for your story. In the end,
it is your book, and all final choices must be yours. My job is
to make it easy on the reader to understand, keeping them held
into the story, while maintaining your voice.
While I prefer to work in print, I will accept Microsoft Word or
a compatible document, using Track Changes so you can easily
find any edits or suggestions. Always keep your original copy
intact. I will save the edited file under a different name to be
sure it doesn't override your original.
Recommendations
(I am currently at the beginning an
official editing career, so recommendations are limited as of now.
Because of this, I am offering very low rates while I'm building my
reputation.)

"There are three people who I credit for actually pushing me to
publish and LK Hunsaker is on that list.
LK was instrumental in my foray into self publishing. We met on
an online writing site around 2008 and I have no idea how many
hours she donated to help fledgling writers like me launch. I
didn't get serious about publishing till many years after her
mentoring (I published my first ebook in 2017) but I referred to
her notes many times while I was working over my drafts.
Her encouragement and interest in helping me as I was getting
started made self publishing not as scary as I feared. She gave
solid advice on where/how to get my book out there. I may have
been able to do it without her, but I am so glad I didn't have
to.
LK's editing advice went beyond simple grammatical help. She
recommended scenes to trim and what scenes/details to add to
strengthen my character development, settings, and fix plot
holes. The version of my book she read was a bloated mess.
Loraine helped me simplify, clarify the plot and cut unnecessary
details so I only needed the two main character points of view.
I can honestly say that had LK not come alongside me in my
publishing journey, not only would it have taken years longer
for me to share what I had written, but my writing would not
have been as polished and I would have run off readers instead
of hooking them."

Rates
My rate depends on how much help your
project needs. The starting rate is $1.00 per page, but that will
raise if your manuscript needs major work. Or it could go down, if
it's already fairly clean. I will need your first ten pages (appr.
3,000 words) to determine your rate, and to provide a sample of my
work. If you're not happy with my offer, you're free to go
elsewhere.
[Note: I may not edit all 10 pages until
we have a signed contract, but I will give you enough to determine
whether you feel comfortable with my work.]
